Changes at Vets Center
Dr. Cliff Trott who has been available at Windham Veterans Center in the past will no longer be holding office hours, due to a reduction in staff at his Portland office. If and when this situation changes, notification will be given. Due to the Independence Day holiday, there will be no American Legion Post 148 meeting on July 3. The next meeting will be the first Wednesday of August. Phyllis D’Orsay, Veteran Service Officer will not be available on July 10 at the Windham Veterans Center.
Free Meal
All ages from surrounding towns are welcome to a free buffet meal at Christ Chapel in Raymond on Saturday, June 29. From 4:30-6 p.m., the buffet includes pasta and meatballs, soup, casseroles, salads and desserts. The church is located at 37 Northern Pines Road (off Route 85 near Crescent Lake) in Raymond.
Waterfront Park Open
Dundee Park, off Presumpscot Road, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Daily fees for residents are $4 for adults, $2 per child; non-residents, $5 for adults, $3 for child. A family pass is $45 for Windham residents and will allow all people in vehicle to get in. Enjoy a picnic, swimming or basketball. There is a new addition to the bath house and a new handicap ramp. Police Fundraiser
The Windham Police Association is conducting a fundraiser that consists of selling advertising space for a police yearbook. Due to requirements in the state law they are required to hire an outside contractor to conduct the telephone solicitation. Donations collected from the fundraising effort go to local and national charities such as the Maine Adaptive Skiing, youth basketball, Southern Maine Hospice, Relay for Life and many others.
The solicitation contractor will be picking up donations from people in a silver 2000 Ford Taurus or a blue Ford Ranger, his first name is Mike. If people are not comfortable leaving the donations outside for pickup then they can always drop them off at the police station during the day. Senior News
Lakes Region Senior Center is located at 40 Acorn Street, Gorham. This is the former Little Falls School. It’s easy to become a member and visit with others in a relaxed setting. Hours in the summer are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center will be closed July 4. On July 17, an Anniversary Celebration will be held. Paid reservations are required for a catered picnic with entertainment and games. Entry is $7 per person, and should be paid by July 10. Call Marge at 892-4955. On Monday, July 22, at 10 a.m., What You Need to Know About Homecare will be presented. A nurse from Family Health Care will make this presentation giving valuable information for seniors and their offspring. This is open to the public, bring a friend and/or relative. Refreshments will be served. This is a drop-in center, become a member and join the daily activities or just socialize. Daily independent activities include needlework, crafts, cards, cribbage, board games, Wii games and many more.
Library Closed Friday Mornings
The Windham Public Library will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays, temporarily, while the search for a library director is ongoing. Notification will be made when they resume regular hours.
Music with a Mission
The Milltown Road Show will perform their blend of roots, Americana and original tunes at the North Windham Union Church on Friday, June 28, at 7 p.m. as part of the “Music with a Mission” series. Tickets sold at the door are $12 adults and $10 for students, children, and seniors. Box office opens at 6:15 p.m. and the doors will open at 6:30. Car Wash
The Windham High School girls volleyball team will hold a benefit car wash on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at NAPA on Route 302 in North Windham. Medicare Help?
On Tuesdays, July 2 and 16, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. An event within an event was held last week at the Sebago Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce’s June Business Break at Spring Meadows Golf Course in Gray. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting featured new chamber member, Tricia Jamiol Photography, located in Windham. Chamber directors joining the photo – flanking Jamiol (with scissors) and her business partner Christina Fay – were Executive Director Aimee Senatore, Tom Bartell, Ruth York, Allan Phinney, Dan Hancock, Deb McPhail, Leeann Sanborn, Mary Sawyer, Julie Arsenault and Dave Pollard.
