Former University of Maine teammates Pete Adams and Mark Sutton are among this year’s class of 10 people chosen for the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, which will hold its annual induction ceremony Aug. 5 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.
Adams, a shortstop from Portland High, and Sutton, a second baseman from Cony High, formed the double-play combination for UMaine teams that reached the College World Series in 1981 and 1982. Adams went on to play in the New York Yankees system, and Sutton reached Double-A in the Texas Rangers organization.
This year’s class also includes:
• Bill Fairchild, who coached Oak Hill High to three state championships during a 28-year career.
• Wayne Hartford, a dominant pitcher for Husson in the 1960s who still holds the school’s career record with 22 victories.
• John Kezal, a former Pine Tree League player who was instrumental in the organization and promotion of American Legion baseball in the Rumford area.
• Wilfred Laverdiere, an outfielder for Colby College and the semipro Farmington Flyers in the 1950s and a former high school coach.
• Dave Sprague, a shortstop at Gorham High and Springfield College and an MVP of the Portland Twilight League.
• Brud Stover, who played on three American Legion state championship teams for Smith-Tobey Post of Bath and was a three-sport standout at Bowdoin College.
• Ralph Stowell, an all-Telegram League player at Portland High who later led the Portland Twilight League in home runs four times.
• Stan Timberlake, who starred for the Turner Townies and helped organize Little League Baseball in Turner.
The President’s Award recipient is Peggy Siegle, the founder of Four Seasons Baseball and a pioneer in the development of indoor baseball facilities in Maine.
