The Lady Blazes and the Lady Stags wrestled for supremacy through the better part of four exciting quarters Tuesday night – wrestled till the very final seconds, when Cheverus’s Brooke Dawson delivered a surprise three-pointer to grab a come-from-behind, 53-52 win.

The result moves both teams to the same record: 6-5. The Blazes rank eighth in A West, while the Stags rank ninth.

Alisha Aube put Westbrook on top to begin, but Anne Veroneau answered immediately for the Stags. It looked to be tight, this one, from start to finish – and it was, for the most part. For the next few minutes, though, the Blazes built a lead: Marissa Martel drained a quick two before Westbrook found themselves at the line on four consecutive Cheverus fouls. Soon enough, the Blazes were up 10-3, and it appeared, for the stretch, like the Stags might simply hand the game over.

But Cheverus fought back as the first quarter waned, pulling within one at 12-11 on four points from Emme Poulin and two each from Deirdre Sanborn and Laura Holman.

The teams traded the upper hand, back-and-forth in the second; Poulin put the Stags ahead 13-12 from the line, then Sarah Wagner inched Westbrook back on top, 14-13. Brook McElman and Alayna Briggs bucketed these for Cheverus as the quarter progressed, and though Aube responded regularly on the Blazes’ behalf, she managed only twos. A trio of Veroneau points and a Holman two secured a 24-22 advantage for the Stags, heading into the half.

Cheverus surged further in front to start the third; a Dawson two, close to the buzzer, gave them the bout’s first double-digit lead, 42-32.

Now it was Westbrook’s turn to recoup a deficit – and they did: Aube led the charge, sinking two free-throws on a technical foul against the Stags bench, then promptly followed up with a three. Martel turned a pretty steal into two more, and suddenly the Blazes owned the scoreboard again, 46-44.

With 38 seconds on the clock, the tug-of-war stuck at 50-50. Westbrook called timeout to regroup, and when the squads returned to the floor, Aube fed a wide-open Martel underneath and Martel laid in an easy two, reclaiming the advantage. Cheverus reversed the play 30 seconds later, calling timeout themselves to hopefully reset the momentum for the taking.

Their first attempt after time-in missed its mark, so they called for another pause in the action with just over three seconds remaining. And this time, when play resumed, the ball found Dawson’s hands – and Dawson found the net from downtown. A game-winning three.

Westbrook head coach Chris Aube had no comment after the battle, but was clearly frustrated with the result. He could be heard expressing disapproval to the officials following the conclusion of play.

Alisha Aube finished with a game-high 22 for the Blazes; teammate Danasia Fennie had 14. Holman and Veroneau tallied 11 apiece.

Westbrook travels to No. 11 Marshwood (5-5) on Friday. Cheverus visits No. 6 South Portland (7-3) that same evening.
