Annual kids’ ice fishing derby this weekend

The Sebago Lake Rotary Club is organizing the Hooked on Fishing Kids’ Ice Fishing Derby at Range Pond State Park 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday, March 7.

Free ice fishing traps are available for the first 500 registered children ages 12 and under who arrive before 10 a.m., compliments of Kittery Trading Post.

Free ice-fishing basics will be taught as well as pre-drilled holes and free bait for kids. First come, first served.

Additional fun includes cross country ski trails, a sliding hill and food vendors.

Portland Water District offers scholarship

The deadline to apply for the $1,500 Joseph A. DiPietro Scholarship is May 15. The scholarship serves students in the Portland Water District’s member communities who will attend college and strive toward the same mission as PWD – protect public health and the environment.

“Our board is proud to recognize outstanding students while honoring a longtime trustee who was dedicated to his community,” stated Board of Trustees President Guy Cote. “In 2014 we celebrate the 10th year awarding DiPietro Scholarships. We continue to be impressed by the number of qualified applications received.”

The scholarship was established in 2003 in memory of respected businessman and longtime Portland Water District trustee, Joe DiPietro.

‘Fill a Trailer’ for Riding To The Top

It takes a lot of gadgets, machines, equipment and grain to keep Riding To The Top, Northern New England’s largest year-round therapeutic riding center, running smoothly. That is why the center’s executive director Sarah Bronson was thrilled when Tractor Supply Co. in Windham signed on to host the “Fill a Trailer for RTT” event on Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Tractor Supply Co., 496 Roosevelt Trail.

“What a great way to highlight what it takes to keep our horses happy and healthy, our farm maintained and our riders properly equipped!”

Lists of needed items are available at Tractor Supply of Windham or you can visit the event’s page at ridingtothetop.org. Volunteers will be on hand to greet and assist shoppers.

Founded in 1993, Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center helps people with disabilities reach their highest potential through the healing power of horses.

Last month, state Sen. Amy Volk, a Republican from Scarborough, hosted her nephew Brady Napolitano, of Windham, at the State House. Napolitano, who is a student at Windham Christian Academy, served as an honorary page during Thursday’s session. He helped deliver messages to senators as well as helped the chamber staff with their daily duties. He began his lifelong love of art in the military, producing posters for a hospital as well as illustrations for U.S. Air Force Intelligence assignments. After studying art design with international artist John Ferren, he expanded his artistic skills by regularly creating cartoons for local newspapers and educational publications. Although his career was in education, he found ways to incorporate his skills as an artist into his work – including art/visual aid constructions in East Africa. More than a dozen colorful landscapes, seascapes and other forms of paintings adorn the library walls. Courtesy image
