School visitors policy OK’d

Gorham School Committee last week unanimously approved a new policy regulating visitors at the district’s five schools.

The 7-0 vote followed the second reading.

With a written policy in place, all visitors to a school are mandated to report to the main office. The policy covers all school property – buildings and grounds.

In other news, former School Committee member Kathy Garrard has returned to the panel. Garrard was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Anne Lawrence, who left the post in November with two years remaining of a three-year term. Lawrence was relocating.

Garrard will serve until the June election when voters will choose a replacement.

At Plymouth State University in Plymouth, N.H., Jessica Harriman of Gorham has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester.

Gardeners

to hear Bailey

Kathleen Carr Bailey, a master gardener, will speak when Gorham Garden Club meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the First Parish Congregational Church, 1 Church St.

Bailey’s topic is landscaping and the home gardener. The public is welcome to attend.

A bit of history

In 1750, Gorham Proprietors met at the fort on Feb. 26, according to the Gorham Historical Society website. Capt. John Waite, Moses Pearson, Esq. and William Cotton were chosen as a committee to consider building a meetinghouse, a location and size.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public debt reported on Feb. 14 that the U.S. public debt was $16,540,800,290,147.46.
