Karen D’Andrea, a Scarborough constituent of Representative Amy Volk, recently submitted two letters that inaccurately reflect my voting record. After I informed Ms. D’Andrea that she was in error, she wrote a disappointing correction.
The letters state that I opposed LD 1181, a bill which involved further regulation of bisphenol A (BPA), a key component in plastics and resins. In fact, regarding final passage, I voted with the majority in favor of the amended bill.
Regarding the veto, I did not vote one way or another because it was presented to the Senate, not the House of Representatives. I serve as a state representative, not as a senator, thus it was not within my jurisdiction to vote on this veto.
While everyone is welcome to their own opinions, as a mother of three children, a dental hygienist, and serving as a member of the Health and Human Services committee, Substance Abuse Services Commission, Maine Children’s Growth Council and an appointee to the National Council of State Legislatures’ on Health, I am involved and concerned with adult and children’s health issues.
The assertion that I support chemical companies is curious since I have never accepted campaign contributions from any lobbyists, and I have never even met a chemical company lobbyist.
Before commenting publicly, I encourage Ms. D’Andrea and others who are confused by the legislative process to first offer elected officials an opportunity to explain their position.
I take the responsibility of serving as a citizen legislator seriously, and consider many facts before casting votes. I welcome, and frequently receive input, not only from my constituents in Scarborough but also from others as well, who contact me to express their views or to ask questions regarding legislative matters.
