Your editorial published Wednesday, Sept. 4, begins by naming climate science as a “theory,” saying “Climate-change theorists believe mankind is having a negative impact, while others believe the vastness of the planet can handle anything people and their machines throw at it.”

On Aug. 17, Durham Friends Meeting hosted a talk by Dr. Kerry Emanuel, professor of atmospheric science at MIT; he is a world expert in hurricanes, and in 2006 was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the world’s most influential scientists. Dr. Emanuel spoke about the scientific causes of climate change, and their meaning for our world – including the frequency and severity of hurricanes. He discussed ways that we could counter or otherwise address climate change.

Because Dr. Emanuel is a conservative and Republican, his experience and perspective is becoming increasingly sought. He said that only 3 percent of reputable scientists have any doubt at all about climate change, and that it is very important that we stop politicizing the issue.

Dr. Emanuel used an analogy, asking us: “If you were diagnosed with cancer and 96 doctors suggested that treatment was necessary, but 3 thought that you might get away with doing nothing … What would you do?”

Dr. Emanuel has written a book: “What We Know About Climate Change.” I suggest that anyone who thinks that climate change is just a theory should probably read his book.
