CASCO – Evelyn Meserve, a Poland native who lives in Whitinsville, Mass., has plans to convert the former Casco Associated Grocer’s store, which closed in 2012, into a convenience store.

Meserve has signed a purchase and sale agreement with Wayne and Kelly Lewis, the owners of the .75-acre lot at 978 Meadow Road, or Route 121, in Casco Village.

According to Don Murphy, Casco’s code enforcement officer, the town issued Meserve a business permit on April 11 for the property. Meserve said she hopes to close the deal soon and open the business by July 1.

“We will be reopening as a convenience store,” she said. “Our goal is to become the convenience store for the community and to be there when we’re needed.”

Meserve said the store, which will be named Casco Village Variety, will carry a range of items similar to the former Casco AG.

“We will have fast food, such as sandwiches and pizzas. And the goal is to carry beverages, soda, soda water, dairy products, as well, including beer and wine.”

There are no plans to renovate the building, Meserve said.

Meserve is the executive director of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety, which is “the only organization solely dedicated to professionals involved in managing and directing security and safety programs in health-care institutions,” according to the group’s website.

Two decades ago, she owned a redemption center in Poland.

“I was born and brought up in Poland Spring,” she said. “I’m from the area, and I’m looking to come back home.”

Meserve said she plans to live in a one-bedroom apartment on the side of the two-story building.

“I wanted to come back to Maine and do a small business, to be closer to family and friends,” Meserve said. “Things are just falling in place to make it a reality, and I’m excited about it.”

Murphy said that Meserve intends to “cater to the locals as well as the summer guests.”

“Everyone’s excited to see a neighborhood village store open up again,” he said.
