“I was not the lion, but it fell to me to give the lion’s roar.” -Winston Churchill
Mary Adams of Garland, Maine is leading the effort for Maine’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Mary had a previous citizens’ initiatives several years ago which terminated the state of Maine Property Tax. She is a fireball combined with dynamite who has successfully brought her latest citizens’ initiative to this November’s election in the form of a referendum question.
We in the tax and spending reform movement in Maine affectionately call Mary Adams “The General,” which was a title given to her by Kevin Crocker of WLOB talk radio out of Westbrook. Mary usually calls Kevin’s show every Saturday after the 7 a.m. news break.
Mary has rallied the troops in support of Maine’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights across the state of Maine. Her campaign style is understanding, effective and noted for her pony’s bridal which she carries everywhere she goes. Instead of being able to run wild, the pony is controlled by the use of that bridal.
Maine’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights is the bridal that is needed to rein in the out-of-control spending at all levels in the state of Maine. There are four important points that you should know (this is from www.taxpayerbillofrights.com):
1. Reasonable spending limits and no cuts required, ever. Government spending will still be able to grow at a reasonable rate.
2. Tougher to raise taxes. The Taxpayer Bill of Rights will require a two-thirds vote of any governing body to raise a tax or fee and a majority vote of the voters.
3. Rainy day fund for emergencies. The Taxpayer Bill of Rights creates a Budget Stabilization Fund. This is a savings account designed to make sure that the bureaucracy will be forced to save money for a rainy day to help governments get through difficult financial times.
4. Returns money back to you. It creates a Taxpayer Relief Fund to make sure excess tax dollars are returned to the taxpayer.
There are those who are opposed to Maine’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights, the majority of whom depend upon your money for their survival. In other words, they don’t care what it costs you; they just want all of your money.
Any limits placed upon government spending scares them to death. Be aware that such entities as the Maine Municipal Association (MMA), the State of Maine Employees Union, the AARP (which we’ll call Americans Against Retired People) and teachers’ unions at all levels are using your tax dollars in order that the November referendum question on Maine’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights will be defeated. If they cared about you keeping your hard-earned money, people wouldn’t be losing their homes across the state.
The groups opposing Maine’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights are not hesitating to use lies and mistruths to influence citizens voting on the referendum question in November.
Many have stated that budgets will be slashed, your house will burn down and that our schools will close. The most amazing part of these lies is that spending will be cut. You can go to Mary Adam’s Web site listed above and read the legislation proposed for Maine.
Nowhere in the language in the proposed legislation is there proposed cuts for any budget!
