Nick Marshall scored two goals to lead Lake Region to a 6-2 win over Sanford in high school hockey at the Biddeford Ice Arena on last Saturday.
Tavish Leland put the Lakers (2-5) in front with 8:52 remaining in the first period when he picked up a Redskins’ defensive turnover and was able to walk in alone on Sanford goalie Ron Clark.
The game stayed close until late in the second period when Marshall scored with just over three minutes remaining. The Lakers then added a back-breaker goal with just 1.5 seconds remaining, to push their lead to 3-0 after two periods.
Sanford got on the scoreboard with under six minutes remaining in the final period when Mike Wallingford cleared the puck from the Redskins’ end of the ice. The puck traveled the length of the rink and snuck under the Lakers’ goalie, giving Wallingford his first score of the season. A minute later Sanford scored again.
The Bonny Eagle ice hockey team lost their second straight after opening the season 5-0. They dropped a 5-4 decision to Deering as the Rams scored a short-handed goal late in the final period.
Deering scored the only goal of the first 15 minutes and they took a 2-0 lead at the start of the second. Bonny Eagle then rallied to within one on a goal from Nate Jewell. Another score by Deering upped the Rams’ lead to 3-1 before Travis Dunn scored to send the teams to the third period with Deering hanging onto a 3-2 lead.
Bonny Eagle tied the game at 3-3 (another goal from Dunn) and they tied the score at 4-4 (another goal from Jewell).
Deering’s Joe Gildart then scored the short-handed game-winner with just over two minutes to play.
The Scots are now 5-2 and they will pick up their regular season schedule against Mt. Ararat on Saturday, Jan. 6.
