Michael Blanck and Lynn Olson claimed significant victories in their respective Standish Town Council races on Tuesday.

Blanck defeated William Orr 1,181 to 698 and Olson beat incumbent Wayne Newbegin 1,174 to 786.

Olson, an active member of the Planning Board and Village Design Implementation committee, was excited about the win but exhausted after spending 14 hours on the concrete walkway at Standish Town Hall greeting voters.

“I’m grateful for individuals voting for me,” Olson said. “I have a very extensive government accounting background as well as business development background and am hoping to the put that to work for the citizens of Standish.”

Blanck was also thankful for the votes he received.

“I’m the unknown name,” he said. “I ran a campaign from a very positive point of view, that Standish is a very good town, fiscally responsible and my goal is to keep that up.”

Among Blanck’s goals are to negotiate beach access at the Sand Bar Beach with the Portland Water District, repave roads and keep the mil rate “at or below what it is now.”

Newbegin did not return phone calls for this story.

Orr, a longtime budget committee member and council watchdog who has had numerous run-ins with Town Manager Gordon Billington, said of the results, “I didn’t win because the fix was in.”

Orr explained that he felt the establishment, namely town employees and firefighters and those in differing political circles, conspired against his election prospects.

Regarding Blanck, Orr said, “He’s never been to a town council or any meeting that I’m aware of. He’s just one of Billington’s dupes.”

Asked whether he’ll stay active in Standish politics or go back to his role as council watchdog, Orr said, “This is my last shot at it, I’m done. I’m not even going to bother with (annual) town meeting. They have town attorney Bill Dale as moderator, meaning the people don’t even get to elect a moderator. It’s not right.”
