Republicans Meet
Windham Republicans will hold their caucus on Feb. 2. All interested Republicans and un-enrolled voters are urged to gather at the Windham Community Center at 10 a.m. According to Gary Plummer, the main purposes of the caucus are to elect delegates to the 2008 Republican Convention, to nominate election clerks, to nominate four people to serve on the Cumberland County Republican Committee and to elect a Republican town committee to serve for the next two years.
This year Republicans are also doing a presidential preference survey. At the caucus, Republicans may express their preference for a candidate for President of the United States. You must be present at the caucus to vote. Votes will be tallied and called in to the Republican County Committee. This survey will not be binding on convention delegates, since under state party rules, all delegates are elected as uncommitted delegates.

Democrats Meet
The Windham Democrats will hold the Presidential Caucus Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Friends Church on Route 202 across from the Public Safety Building. Registration will begin at 2 p.m. and the caucus will begin at 3 p.m., when doors will close. The caucus is expected to go until 5 or 5:30 p.m.
Windham Town Clerk Linda Morell will be available until 3 p.m. to register new voters or change un-enrolled voters to Democrats. Democrats unable to attend may obtain an absentee ballot in three ways:
• Calling Maine Democratic Headquarters in Augusta at 622-6233
• Downloading an absentee ballot application from www.mainedems.org
• Writing or faxing their request with all needed information to Democratic Headquarters
The Windham Town Clerk does not have absentee ballots.
The caucus agenda includes affirming by-laws, and electing representatives to the Cumberland County Committee, election clerks and other business to come before the caucus. In addition presentations will be made on behalf of congressional candidates and presidential candidates.
The last item on the agenda is the selection of delegates to the state convention, where delegates representing presidential candidates will be selected for the National Democratic Convention.
During this process, Democrats will declare their choice by physically separating into different parts of the room with their fellow supporters for a particular candidate. At this time, a determination will be made as to how many delegates to the state convention each candidate is entitled.
Volunteers are needed to help with what is expected to be a large crowd. For more information or to volunteer, please call Michael Shaughnessy at 329-5042 or 892-4672 or email at michaeljshaughnessy@verizon.com
