Students and staff won’t be moving back to Portland’s Hall Elementary School until at least after next week, according to an automated telephone call from the Portland School Department.
The call, from Peter Eglinton, chief operating officer for the school system, says the district is still waiting for the results of environmental testing at Hall, which suffered extensive water damage after a fire two weeks ago. The district hopes to have the students moved back to Hall by next Friday, Oct. 5, Eglinton said in the message that is also posted on the school system’s website.
“Unfortunately, we will still be returning to Cathedral next week, with the goal of moving back to Hall School by that Friday,” he said.
Students missed a week of classes and this week have been attending classes at the former Cathedral School between Congress and Cumberland streets.
“We will be sending our independent consultant to Hall School (today) to review the results and inspect the work at the site,” the message said. “If everything looks good, we will schedule a public forum to discuss the findings and answer questions. Hall School could then open.”
Depending on the test results, the district plans to have a meeting with parents and staff to discuss the move back.
