AUGUSTA — The Maine medical examiner’s office says a body found inside a home in Friendship on Sunday was that of an escaped prisoner who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Officials say 21-year-old Brian Floyd escaped Friday night from the low-security Bolduc Correctional Facility in Warren, where he was serving time for theft and due to be released in 2015.

Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland told the Bangor Daily News that Floyd entered the home where he was found dead because its door was unlocked and the family was away for the weekend.

McCausland said police were able to track Floyd to the house because he was communicating with other people on Facebook from a computer at the residence.
