Do you agree with BRAC’s decisions regarding Maine’s military bases?

Karl Jacobsen, 51, Standish

“My son, Mike, just started working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard two months ago. He took a risk even accepting the job. He’s a Massachusetts Maritime Academy grad and he’s very happy about the BRAC decision. You know, what’s amazing is how proud he became of the organization so quickly. They all have a real sense of loyalty, and I think the commission made a good decision based on the quality of the work and the culture of the workforce.”

“I think Brunswick’s closing is going to have an impact on our economy. Maine already has some problems with poverty. My concern is the impact on Brunswick, itself. It takes a long time to revitalize an area. Also, we’re now very vulnerable on the coast where people can come in and invade at any time. Closing Brunswick is just going to make us more vulnerable.”

“We got two out of three but the government’s going to find out they made a mistake not giving us three out of three. Brunswick’s just too crucial. Just like they found out they needed more at Limestone, they’re soon going to find out they needed to keep Brunswick.”

Fred Conti, 84, Windham

“I think it’s a sad day for Maine. But I think Brunswick is on the ball and will use this as a chance to develop itself to be financially productive for the whole area.”

Frank Grieve, 54, Raymond

“I travel throughout the state and there’s still a fair amount of poverty out there. There’s a lot of economic diversity in the state but with the change in national security, I think it would be beneficial to have these northeast military facilities remain open. I’m disappointed they closed Brunswick.”

Jessica McKinney, 23, Windham

“We have nothing in Maine anymore. It’s not fair. We don’t have security up here anymore. All those thousands of people are going to be out of jobs. The Midcoast’s real estate market will drop. People will be forced to sell their homes because they have no jobs anymore. It’s not fair.”
