Those frustrated by rising prices and the threat of contaminated food who would like to grow better quality food are invited to demonstrations on growing, canning and preserving food at Common Folk Farm in Naples.
Betz Golon who is co owner of Common Folk Herb Farm and manager of the Shaker Herb Gardens in New Gloucester, will offer several helpful demonstrations from her kitchen in Naples.
Golon is an agricultural instructor for the Shaker community, Master Gardener classes and museums around the country. She serves as an herbalist at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate and gardens in Virginia.
The strawberry harvest will be highlighted from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2. Learn how to freeze without sugar and gain tips on making preserves and jams. Canning and preserving information to take home will be provided.
Learn how to make pesto Aug. 13 in the “Basil or The King of the Herb Garden” session from 10-11 a.m. The ways to use basil are endless and easy. Drying, creating vinegars, oils, pesto and herb pastes with basil will be discussed with a demonstration of making basil pesto from the field to the freezer.
Demonstrations will be 30 to 45 minutes with time for questions. The cost is $5 per program. Space limited to six to eight people per program and pre-registration is required. Common Folk Farm is located on Kimball Corner Road. Call 693-2764 for directions and to register.
