Boys Cross Country
Coach: Jim Harmon
Last year’s record: First at Regionals, second at States
Key athletes: Jacob Terry, Colin Tardiff, Sean McGovern, Andrew Sholl, Jacob Bloom, Will Fowler, Maxim Doiron, Connor Doherty, David Grover, Colin Jones, John Pillsbury, Sam Rusak
Key meets: Regionals, States
Outlook: “We should be one of the top SMAA teams if we can stay healthy,” says Harmon. “That will set us up for a run at the Regional and State Championship titles.”
Girls Cross Country
Coach: Ron Kelly
Key athletes: Isabelle Dibiase (sr.), Madalyn Sirois (sr.), Jennifer Lee (sr.), Jenna Douglas (sr.), Kayla Griffiths (sr.), Maria Quartararo (sr.), Sarah Rinaldi (sr.), Bella Robinson (sr.), Vea Gardner (jr.), Alexandra McCown (jr.), Juliet Karam (jr.), Emma Swanson (jr.), Laura Volan (jr.), Morgan McKeown (jr.), Sophie Lawsure (jr.), Emma Lynch (jr.), Hope Corrow (jr.), Marisa Carbone (so.), Edie Christian (so.), Maureen Degrinney (so.), Ellen Shaw (so.), Lily MacDonald (so.), Kirsten Dennen (fr.), Melody Mowry (fr.), Samantha Saraceno (fr.), Bethany Sholl (fr.),
Key meets: Bonny Eagle, Massabesic, Falmouth
Outlook: Kelly, whose squad is deep and talented, expects to battle for a top five spot this year.
Football
Coach: Lance Johnson (fifth year)
Last year’s record: 6-4
Key players: Andrew Simons (sr., TE/DE); Patrick Shaw (sr., G/NG); Zach Carriero (sr., RB/DB); Jack Hughes (jr. QB/DB); Griffin Madden (jr., WR/DB)
Key games: Thornton, Bonny Eagle, at South Portland
Outlook: Johnson sees a number of strengths in his squad. First and foremost, he identifies their work ethic, “and the effort they’ve put in during the offseason and summer.” Further, the Storm can “spread the field with athletic players and big tight ends.” The team’s defense is aggressive, and plays “fundamentally sound football.” With just three returning members of the offense, and one of the defense, the team is young, but Johnson says they’ve “developed depth in our program, with good players ready to step in and fill important roles for us.”
Golf
Coach: Mike Murphy
Last year’s record: 8-2
Key players: Braeden Kane (sr.), Drew Kane (jr.), Mitchell Wedge (jr.)
Key matches: Falmouth, Cheverus, South Portland, Deering, Portland
Outlook: “This is a team that has potential to win its share of matches,” Murphy says. But the Red Storm face their share of challenges too, not the least of which is having to replace three starters from last year’s highly successful squad. Drew Kane will undoubtedly shine; “he played in the one hole all last season,” Murphy says – and that was as a sophomore.
Girls Soccer
Coach: Mike Farley
Last year’s record: 12-2-2
Key players: Ashley Gleason (sr.), Sam Sparda (sr.), Katherine Kirk (sr.), Mary Farnkoff (sr.), Emma Smith (jr.), Elise O’Reilly (jr.), Aly Atherton (jr.), Molly LeComte (jr.), Ashely Perriello (so.)
Key games: Windham, Thornton, Deering, Gorham
Outlook: Farley has been impressed with the way his girls are approaching the season – as if they have something to prove. The Red Storm lost numerous impact players in June, but retain quite a few as well. “We have some players back that were key contributors, and some that have been waiting for their chance to become our go-to players,” he says. “We have a number of spots on the field that are up for grabs, and that’s made for a competitive preseason.” No matter how the Scarborough lineup pans out, younger players will enter the fray, “especially on the offensive end of the field.” Farley hopes the mix of experience and fresh determination will propel his squad to the top of the SMAA.
Volleyball
Coach: Jon Roberts (fifth year)
Key players: Kayla Savage (sr., Captain); Emma Tirrell (sr., Captain); Maddi Leadley (sr., Captain); Krissy Maloney (sr.), Mina Puig (sr.), Lindsey Thurston (sr.), Megan Brooks (sr.)
Key matches: Falmouth, Greely, Biddeford, Cape, Gorham
Outlook: Last year’s graduating class at SHS held a lot of volleyball talent, meaning this year’s senior members of the volleyball team haven’t seen a great deal of on-court experience. Roberts stresses, however, that most have extensive club experience and, of course, practice against their comrades. “We have a very talented bench of juniors and sophomores who are pushing the seniors hard every day, and will be competing for court time in games.” Volleyball is only growing in popularity in southern Maine, so competition is getting stiffer, which Roberts recognizes. “We have a tough schedule this year, but we hope to come together in time to qualify for the playoffs, and then…anything is possible,” she said.
