The Indoor Track Class A State Championships unfolded at USM’s Costello Sports Complex in Gorham on Monday, and brought with it some surprises, and some not-so-surprises. On the boys’ side of things, Falmouth took top honors, upsetting Scarborough, who’ve stood atop the podium for four years running. On the girls’ side, Thornton repeated as victors.

Both the Westbrook and Gorham girls squads finished middle of the pack – the Blazes in 11th and the Rams in 13th – while the schools’ boys teams tied one another (and Brewer) a little further back at 18th.

Gorham’s Kristin Benson showed quite strongly for the Rams, taking seventh in the 55-meter and second in the 200. Teammate Anna Slager – always strong in the distance events – finished second in the Two Mile.

Westbrooker Halee Phelps grabbed six points for the Blazes by taking third in the Mile, then six more by taking third in the Two Mile as well. The 4×200 relay combo of Brittney Arsenault, Courtney Arsenault, Kelsey Cavanaugh and Jenessa Corbett finished sixth, as did their 4×800 compatriots, Danielle Breunig, Linnaea Miller, Mackenzie Rayner and Sara Terrano. And Genna Alhilfi, just a sophomore, placed third in the shotput.

For the boys, Gorham’s Ethan Orach secured his team’s six points with a third-place take in the 800. Maurice Johnson claimed fourth for Westbrook in the 55 and the 4×800 team – Nick Childs, Elijah Gakuru, Josh Lombardo and Josh Richards – finished sixth for two points more.

Dominic Creenan of Westbrook clears a hurdle in the prelims.
