Girls Basketball

Coach: Michael Giordano (third year)

Last year’s record: 9-9, fell to TA in A West quarterfinals

Key players: Jamie Sargent (sr.), Emma Hall (sr.), Brook Malone (jr.), Jordyn Cowan (jr.), Sophie Glidden (so.)

Key games: McAuley, South Portland, TA

Outlook: “Getting off to a good start will help our very young roster,” says Giordano. To that end, he aims to play up-tempo basketball from Day 1 onward. The MPA’s changes to the tournament system keep Scarborough in the biggest class, now called AA, but admit only six teams to the postseason, and competition is stiff. As Giordano points out: “Perennial powers McAuley, South Portland, Thornton and Gorham [are] all in the South.”

Girls Hockey (with Sacopee Valley)

Coach: Caitlin D’Amour (ne?e Cashman)

Key players: Sami Shoebottom, Lily Nygren, Madison O’Reilly, Lucy Bogdanovich, McKenzie Cormier

Key games: Falmouth, Greely, Lewiston, Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland

Outlook: “Our goal every season is to make it to States, and this season it’s no different,” D’Amour says. The Storm are young this year, with just two seniors, and youth brings with it particular challenges, but the team is “a hardworking bunch with lots of speed,” as D’Amour says; those factors give her hope of outlasting teams in the third period. To that end, she’s also focusing on conditioning her girls to endure – to operate full-steam-ahead for 45 full minutes. “We want to be an aggressive, but controlled and disciplined, team that can execute systems and finish plays,” D’Amour says.

Coach: Eric French (sixth year)

Last year’s record: Boys 6-2, fourth at Southwesterns, ninth at States; girls 3-6, eighth at Southwesterns, 14th at States

Key athletes: Kyle Ankermann (sr., 50 Free/100 Back); TJ Hinkley, III (jr., 200 Free/500 Free); Anton Jasa (jr., 100 Fly); Joey Christian (jr., 500 Free); Sam Greenberg (so., 100 Free/100 Back); Edie Frederick (jr., 100 Breast); Hannah Griffin (so., 500 Free/100 Back); Megan Caldwell (so., 200 IM)

Key meets: Cape, Greely, Falmouth, Cheverus

Outlook: French is excited about the coming season. His team is the largest it’s been – 68-strong – since he took over coaching duties six years ago; both the senior class and the freshmen class are large, boding well for this year’s results and for the future as well. “We’ll be led by a solid group of upperclassmen for the boys team, with a few younger swimmers,” French says. “Our girls team will rely on a mixture of upperclassmen and a strong freshman team that’s been waiting to break out into the high school scene.” Scarborough has picked up some additional talent from out of state, a handful of athletes who recently moved to Maine and should “make for a bonus when dealing with teams like Cape and Cheverus that have 60-plus swimmers.” French & Co.’s goals for the year are clear: top-three at Southwesterns and top-eight at States.

Outlook: “We return an experience team,” says Veilleux. He adds that “our depth isn’t what it has been in the past, but we have several standout athletes that should contribute at all levels.” The Storm welcome a big batch of incoming freshmen to their ranks – a good sign for the program as it looks toward the future. “Our goal will be to get better each day and compete at our best during the championship season.”
