Jeff Graham, owner of the Stone Dog CafA?© on Route 302 in Windham, reported that the condenser on his walk-in refrigeration unit had been stolen from outside his business on March 30.
“It’s the size of a window air conditioning unit. I noticed it missing immediately.” Graham said.
Graham was able to get assistance and transported his refrigerated product to Dave Gutter’s Meat Market to store temporarily. Most of his product has been wedged into a smaller refrigerator for access throughout the business day until the unit is replaced.
The owner said the replacement unit will cost $2,500, which he said is hard on a small business in Windham coming off a slow season due to the harsh winter winter. Insurance will cover the cost, but it has been two weeks since the unit was stolen.
Officer Ray Williams was dispatched to the CafA?© to take the report. Graham said of Williams, “He’s a nice guy. I was very impressed. He got the identification number.”
Williams tracked the original manufacturer, US Coolers, through the Internet and was able to call the manufacturer. The units are issued identification numbers unique to them much like a vehicle identification number.
“It’s the second in the last year I’ve dealt with,” Williams said. “Whoever is stealing them is familiar with the working of the unit and is taking them with the intention of reusing them.”
Williams noted that knowledge of the unit would be necessary to remove it from the premises with all the copper tubing and electrical wiring and still have it be operational.
There are no suspects at this time.
