Westbrook 2

Massabesic 1

On Friday night, the Westbrook field hockey team traveled to Waterboro to take on Massabesic. The Mustangs took the early lead but a pair of goals by Olivia Hebert and Olivia Marsden gave the Blue Blazes a 2-1 win.

The game started off with both teams getting scoring chances here and there. Both goaltenders were up to the task and managed to keep the game scoreless. Then with 13:39 to go in the first half, the Mustangs struck first. Becca Torrance got loose in the Westbrook end and took a pass on the transition. Torrance buried the ball in the cage for a 1-0 Mustangs lead.

The Massabesic lead lasted just over five minutes. The Blazes got their chance to tie it with a penalty corner with just over eight minutes to go. The ball came to rest on Hebert’s stick and Hebert smacked the ball toward the goal. The ball ricocheted off the pads of Massabesic goalkeeper Anna Vanasse and into the goal to tie the game at one.

Westbrook grabbed the lead for good with just 30 seconds to go in the first half. The Blazes got the ball inside the circle where they managed to get a shot on Vanasse. Vanasse turned it away, but Marsden was there for the rebound and she snuck it through to give her team a 2-1 edge.

Marsden’s goal would prove to be the game-winner as neither team could find the back of the cage in the second half. Westbrook finished its regular season with an 11-3 record, thanks to the win, and Massabesic dropped to 6-8.
