South Portland police arrested a New York City man Friday evening on charges of drug trafficking.

At about 6 p.m., members of the South Portland Police Department culminated a brief drug investigation after obtaining a search warrant for a hotel room near The Maine Mall. Jermaine Faulk, 44, of Yonkers, N.Y., was arrested and charged with unlawful trafficking in cocaine base (crack) and trafficking in heroin. A substantial amount of cocaine base was seized along with U.S. currency and other items indicative of trafficking, according to South Portland police Sgt. Steve Webster.

Faulk has a lengthy criminal history that includes prior drug convictions, weapons charges, robbery and resisting arrest. He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $25,000 cash bail.

Webster said the arrest was a multi-agency investigation that included members of the South Portland police, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the FBI-led Safe Streets Task Force. The Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team served the warrant.
