Editor,
Imagine my surprise and immediate disgust when I discovered on Monday morning that during the night vandilism had occurred to political and referendum signs that had been placed around town.
This act was malicious and destructive to say the least! Obviously it does not matter to the person or persons that were destructive that people spent a great deal of time making, painting, stenciling and putting up signs for their canidate or their cause. Personal money was spent for most of those signs and this act of vandalism was a major blow to any of us who have been respectful to opponents and causes not agreed upon.
My apologies to those people who donated wire frames from past political elections for us to use on the new signs – most of them are gone, and I assume never to be found. If anyone knows anything or has information please contact the Windham Police Department (892-2525) with that information.
It is obvious that even if some play by the rules in this political arena, not everyone does. Whoever you are, the next election is in two years exactly, so get some rest to get ready for your next round of destruction.
On a more positive note, I would like to thank the many citizens of this great town who have worked so diligently over the past several months on the Amended Mineral Extraction Ordinance referendum issue.
There are many people who have given time, a lot of energy and financial donations to pursue the mission of amending the mineral extraction ordinance.
It is important to also thank the citizens who signed the petition last April and May, making it possible to bring this matter before the people of the town, and to those who voted for the amendment on Nov. 7.
I know that there has been controversy and confusing statements made as this matter got closer to voting day, but I am proud to have been a part of a mission that was done with respect to the others with opposing views.
Personally, I have met neighbors and people whom I would have never met or gotten to know, and I am grateful that I had that opportunity to do so.
Again, thank you to those who have pursued our mission and did it with integrity and respect.
