Brazen pair lock a Buxton Hannaford clerk in a freezer.

BUXTON – Buxton police are hunting for two gunmen who locked a clerk in a freezer and robbed the Buxton Hannaford supermarket at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The two gunmen, wearing ski masks, fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Each of the robbers brandished a black handgun.

Buxton police Chief Mike Grovo said Wednesday the gunmen pointed their weapons at the clerk, a store employee who had been stocking shelves.

Grovo said the department worked all day Tuesday on the investigation.

“We’re still working on leads,” Grovo said Wednesday.

The store employee, Grovo said, called police after freeing himself from the freezer. On duty Buxton officers Jason Joiner and Steve Rappold responded to the armed robbery along with Grovo, who went to the scene from home.

The men had entered the closed store through a rear entrance. Police are still investigating how the men gained entry.

Police said the two gunmen were wearing gray and green hooded sweatshirts, dark pants, gloves and ski masks.

Buxton Rescue medical personnel responded to treat the chilled store employee at the scene. Grovo said the man had been able to free himself from the freezer opening it from inside.

“It was cold,” Grovo said, describing the temperature in the freezer.

Police had no suspects early Wednesday.

“We are actively pursuing a number of leads in this case,” Grovo said.

Other area police agencies were notified of the armed robbery and anyone with information is asked to call Buxton police at 929-6612.
