According to South Portland police, a 911 caller reported hearing a single gunshot in the area of Calvary Cemetery off Broadway in South Portland at about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. An elderly male was located near the rear of the cemetery, and Sgt. Steve Webster said it appears as though he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound

No foul play is suspected and the medical examiner’s office will ultimately determine the cause and manner of death, he said.

Police are not releasing the victim’s name since his family has yet to be fully notified. Webster said South Portland police usually don’t report suicide attempts but the public location and resulting media inquiries prompted a press release.
