This intersection at Windham Hill has undergone reconfiguration in recent years, but this is what it looked like about 100 years ago. The Jason Webb Tavern, built in 1803, served travelers for many years, taking the name of the proprietor, Webb, in about 1871. After the advent of motor vehicles, in the early 1900s, the building was purchased by Charles Smith and was used to house people with mental illnesses. Briefly, it was also used as an orphanage. Eventually, the building was partially destroyed by fire – and the upper story was removed, the building remodeled and still serves as a home today, more than 200 years after it was first built.
