“A lie told often enough becomes the truth.” – Lenin
Lane/Tommy: The elections are over so what’s next? Will the next legislature really provide us with tax and spending reform or will they and the governor continue to tell us the same old lies? Two years ago under the scam of LD1 we were promised tax relief but we ended up paying for that invisible relief with higher fees. At the 11th hour, tax-sucking groups stated that they knew LD1 had loopholes that needed to be fixed. What we can’t understand is why didn’t they repair LD1 two year ago.
Tommy: Here we go again with promises of tax relief. Do you really believe that a Democrat governor and legislature can keep their hands out of the public trough? I think not. We did not receive tax relief under the broken LD1 so do you believe changes will now happen?
Lane: I am astounded that the Iraq War had such an influence with our state elections. The national elections do not surprise me but since the Democrats regained control of the House and Senate, terrorist groups around the world are rejoicing in our defeat. Ever since the Carter Administration, the Democrats have been perceived as being weak. In Maine, we feel they just have too many broken promises.
Lane/Tommy: It is time to hold the governor and legislature accountable for future promises. Time has run out. Too many Mainers have reached the breaking point, so they are packing up and leaving the state.
Tommy: Our leaders in the past have sold just about everything they could in order to raise revenues. Maine sold its profitable liquor business for a quick cash fix to supposedly balance the state budget on paper. Mainers are now forced to sell their possessions in order to survive in this state.
Lane: I am tired of the shell game being played in Augusta. I remember when agencies sold a building and a bridge to balance the budget but I do not believe any money went into the trough. It’s time for the smokescreen to disappear in Augusta.
Lane/Tommy: What will the future bring for tax relief in Maine and Windham? The same old Democrats that were in power for 30 years are still there. Can the leopard change its spots?
Lane: The only way to give tax relief is to cut spending. I don’t believe that will ever happen in Maine. Too many promises have been made to special interests in order to gather votes. I will bet on the governor and legislature broadening the sales tax on everything imaginable claiming this is tax relief.
Tommy: It is a shame I must remain pessimistic regarding any tax reform coming from our new legislature. Only our continued vigilance at the highest level will force tax reform in Maine.
Lane/Tommy: Windham might have budget problems of its own. Since our town evaluation has almost doubled, will the state decrease the amount of financial aid for education? We love the fact that Windham voters approved the Taxpayer Bill of Rights referendum. We believe that is a mandate for tax relief in Windham. Our state constitution guarantees our right to totally change or reform our government for our safety and happiness. Will this be necessary next year in Windham and Augusta?
