NOAA’s National Weather Service Forecast Office in Gray will host an Open House for the public on Saturday, Sept. 15, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The Gray office currently provides weather forecasts and warnings for northern, central, and southeastern New Hampshire and southern and western Maine, including the Midcoast area. The office has been located at its present site in Gray since September 1994. Prior to that, the office was located at the Portland Jetport. The move was part of a national program to modernize and restructure the field operations of the National Weather Service.
The open house will include tours of the facility and give the public an opportunity to learn more about the operations of the National Weather Service in Maine and New Hampshire. During the open house, visitors will have the opportunity to view some of the latest technologies and information available to forecasters, including the state-of-the-art Advanced Weather Information Processing System and the WSR-88D Doppler RADAR.
The National Weather Service facility is located north of Portland in the easternmost corner of the town of Gray, on Route 231 (just south of Pineland Farms). The Forecast Office is located in a red brick building on Weather Lane on the right hand side of the road just after the Pineland Equestrian Center. Please park on Weather Lane. Due to limited space for parking, visitors are encouraged to carpool.
