In Windham, we’ve always loved a parade! Back in 1934, a parade was held in Red City, South Windham. Red City was the local name for High Street, where the Real School is located today. Whatever the occasion for the parade, this high stepping horse and carriage was part of the procession. The photo is one of dozens of parade pictures taken in South Windham, and part of an album at Windham Historical Society. By the way, this mode of transportation ran on grain, not gasoline. Red City got its name when the pulp mill built many houses on High Street, where millworkers lived and walked to work. The mill owners painted all the houses red.
