One of the best-known attractions in Windham is the covered bridge known now as Babb’s Bridge. Named for a Babb family, it was originally called Loveitt’s Bridge. This is an old postcard photo and today the bridge looks somewhat different.

There was a bridge here as early as 1777, when a fire started to “smoke out a bear got out of control and crossed the river via the bridge.” In 1856 the town of Gorham rebuilt the bridge; again in 1864, the town paid $400 to “finish the bridge.”

In July, 1973 arsonists burned the bridge and a combined effort of the towns of Windham and Gorham rebuilt it, exactly as it had been. Babb’s Bridge is located on (not surprisingly) Covered Bridge Road in South Windham. Courtesy photo
