The Cape Elizabeth High School boys lacrosse team delivered on the promise and expectations of a 12-0 undefeated regular season, capturing the Maine Class B state championship – their second in a row – with a 6-3 win over Yarmouth at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The top-seeded Capers earned their trip to the final game with an 11-8 win over No. 2-ranked Falmouth in the western regional final at home last Wednesday.

Yarmouth, the fourth seed in the East, got on the board early, scoring just over a minute into the game. Almost 10 minutes would click off the clock before Cape would offer a response, when Owen Thoreck fired in a shot unassisted from the left.

In the second quarter, junior Griffin Thoreck would score twice, and junior midfielder Noah Haversat would add another for a 4-1 Cape lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, senior midfielder Daniel Brett picked up a ground ball in the Cape defensive end and rushed it up the sideline – and just kept going till he fired in a shot to give Cape a 5-1 lead at 7:45.

Junior midfielder Jack Drinan capped off the scoring for the Capers at 9:50 in the fourth quarter, for a 6-1 lead.

The Yarmouth Clippers would appear to have started a rally of their own with two goals in their fourth, but their final tally was a last-gasp at 2:05 with the Capers controlling play until the final whistle.
