Rescue officials responded to a two vehicle head-on crash on Route 302 Wednesday at 1:50 p.m. by State Park Road in Casco. Two Bridgton residents suffered fatal injuries in the incident.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the collision involved a 2014 Chevy Equinox operated by Allen Estes, 66, of Standish, who was traveling east toward Portland on Route 302 and a 2000 Dodge Caravan operated by Carol Honaberger, 70, of Bridgton, traveling west.

Capt. Don Goulet said Honaberger was killed in the crash and her husband, Dale Honaberger, 81, was seriously injured and taken to Bridgton Hospital. He later died from his injuries.

Also injured in the vehicle was the Honabergers’ golden retriever therapy dog, which suffered broken legs and was transported for emergency treatment by animal control officers.

Estes suffered broken bones and other non-life threatening injuries and was released from the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.

The accident shut down the section of Route 302 between State Park Road and Tenney Hill Road for hours, officials reported.
