A Raymond man died last weekend after falling from a ladder while working at a Casco farm.

Richard Wood, 53, of Valley Road in Raymond, was an employee of Carousel Horse Farm in Casco. He died Saturday afternoon while working on a horse shed at the farm, which is located at 69 Leach Hill Road.

Casco Rescue responded and took Wood to Bridgton Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 3 p.m. Saturday.

According to Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Wood was on a ladder hammering a nail when he fell backward off the ladder landing on the ground. It is not clear whether Wood suffered a health emergency before falling or lost his balance. Joyce said the state medical examiner’s office is investigating the cause of death.

Saturday afternoon was extremely hot and humid with temperatures in the 90s. Joyce said a witness of the accident said Wood was “fine” about 20 minutes before the accident. Wood was working on an open-rafter horse shed that was about 10 feet tall and had a dirt floor.
