WESTBROOK – The Westbrook School Committee was expected to vote this week on hiring a new assistant principal for Westbrook High School.
At a Wednesday, June 13 meeting, held after the American Journal’s deadline, the committee was slated to vote on the appointment of Timothy Stebbins, an assistant principal at Bonny Eagle High School, to fill the newly created position at Westbrook, giving the school two assistant principals.
Stebbins was not available for comment this week, but Westbrook School Superintendent Marc Gousse said that Stebbins was the clear favorite of the 38 candidates who applied for the position.
“We had an outstanding pool of applicants,” Gousse said. “Tim obviously rose to the top of that pool.”
Stebbins, whose salary would be $79,275, has been an assistant principal at Bonny Eagle since 2009. Before moving to that position, he was a longtime fixture in the Biddeford school system, working as a teacher and coach from 1986 to 2009.
“He brings a wealth of experience,” Gousse said.
Gousse included the second assistant principal in the 2012-2013 budget in an effort to help the administrative staff at the school better manage the day-to-day operations.
The need for a second assistant principal was driven home recently when an online letter from a Westbrook student regarding bullying at the school caused a sensation. In a previous interview, Gousse said he believed the addition of a second assistant principal at the high school next year would be a help, as well.
“Bringing over some extra support is a good thing,” Gousse said.
Gousse said Stebbins will join the school staff in August and he will be working with Howard Jack, the other assistant principal, as well as incoming Westbrook High School Principal Jon Ross to get ready for the new school year.
“They’ll (Stebbins and Jack) will be working in tandem with the principal,” Gousse said.
