A day to remember

The annual Memorial Day Parade in Gray is scheduled for Monday, May 26. After the 11 a.m. service at Stimson Memorial Hall, parade step off will begin at Russell School on Route 26 and proceed to the American Legion Hall on Route 100.

A green holiday

From Saturday, May 24, through Monday, May 26, the Friends of the Maine Wildlife Park will be holding its annual plant sale during regular park business hours.

The Friends volunteers raise a wonderful variety of large, healthy perennial and annual flowers and vegetables in their own greenhouse, for use in gardens, beds, planters and pots all around the park; and to sell to you at great prices.

All proceeds from these extremely reasonably priced plants, pots and hanging baskets go to benefit the park, its wildlife and its programs.

A worthy return

Cub Scout Pack 86 and Boy Scout Troop 86 have a box for returnable cans at the Bottle Barn on Portland Road in Gray to raise money for veteran scout leader Rod Theriault. He will be undergoing cancer treatment over the next few months in Boston.

The money raised will go towards travel and lodging for the Theriault family. If you would like to make a monetary donation, just mail it to: Bill Hughes, 295 Yarmouth Road, Gray, ME 04039.

Supper is served

Come to supper downstairs at the Gray Congregational Church on Saturday, May 24, at 5 p.m. On the menu will be baked beans, casseroles, salads, homemade breads and dessert, punch and coffee. Curtain calls

There are two performances coming to Gray. The first one on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24, at 7 p.m. at Gray-New Gloucester Middle School “Hello Dolly,” by The Patriot Players of Gray-New Glucester High School Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors.

There will also be a matinee performance Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m. The matinee features a special admission for seniors of $2.

The second performance is by the Green Curtain Theatre of Gray-New Gloucester Middle School, staging “Peter Pan and Wendy” May 30 and 31 at 7 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Up on “The Hill”

Libby Hill, that is. The trails are in excellent condition. Leaves are coming out this week and provide an excellent time to explore the tree identification system. You can download a map at LibbyHill.org and try and find more than 20 species of trees that are identified on the trails.

Many species of wildflowers are blooming and sightings are being reported online. Many species of warblers and other migrating birds are visiting the woods, be sure to bring your binoculars when you visit.

The “Save Libby Hill” campaign is now in full gear. Please help by voting June 10 and donating what you can to ensure Libby Hill remains accessible for future generations.

An upcoming event May 31 is Spring Discovery Day. From 9-11:30 a.m., there will be Kids Discovery Events including Pond Dipping, Soil Safari, Geocaching, Orienteering, and a scavenger hunt.

Picnic on the Hill will be served from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. From 12:15-2 p.m., Barbara Clark will lead a Wildflower Tour. The day ends with a Stonewall and More Tour led by Patty Schorr from 2-3:30 p.m. Event space is limited and reservations are encouraged for all events. Jump in

Wilkies Beach, a Gray residents only facility, officially opens Saturday, May 24. Walk-on fees are $3 for ages 14+. Children ages 3-13 are $1. A family season pass is $45, $25 for individuals. Passes are sold at the Gray Town Office, and proof of Gray residency is required.

Come out kicking

The Patriot Soccer Club is now accepting registration for the fall 2008 season. The club provides a quality youth soccer program primarily for players from the Gray and New Gloucester areas, fielding both boys and girls teams competing in the under-9 through under-14 divisions. All children born on or after August 1, 1994 are eligible for this year’s league. Registration is open until June 1 for Gray and New Gloucester residents.

The registration fee is $125, with sibling discounts as follows: second player per family is $100; third and successive players per family are $75 each. Payment plan options are available. No need to miss a vote

Absentee ballots are now available for the June 10, municipal and state elections. Under Maine’s current law, any registered voter may vote absentee. Registered voters in Gray may vote absentee at the Town Office; absentee ballots may also be requested by telephone or by submitting an application for absentee ballot but you may not request them via e-mail.

Voters may request an application through the Gray Town Office or print an application for an absentee ballot through the state of Maine at

www.maine.gov/portal/government/edemocracy/voter_absenteeform.html

Absentee ballots should be delivered to the Town Clerk no later than 8 p.m. June 10. Any questions should be directed to the Town Office at 657-3339.
