The fire that destroyed Jim Burke and Joanie Wilson’s historic barn on Depot Street in early June was devastating to more than just the couple.

Bridgton residents, Lake Region foodies and summer people who knew Burke and Wilson from their successful restaurants in Boston and Scituate were all eagerly awaiting the opening of Vivo, their Italian Kitchen and Bar that was slated to open this week. Unfortunately, a raging fire burned the lovingly restored 115-year old building to the ground, sending shockwaves of grief and heartbreak through town.

Burke and Wilson soon realized how special of a town Bridgton is, as “people we didn’t even know started approaching us for hugs, kind words and offers of help” says Burke. “We have been overwhelmed by all of the support”. Almost immediately, local service organizations and businesses stepped up to help, and the efforts will culminate in “Bridgton Strong”, a street party created to galvanize support and celebrate the rebuilding of Vivo.

On Saturday, June 27, from 5-8 p.m., Depot Street will be filled with revelers enjoying locally prepared food, live music and dozens of Chinese Auction items. Donations have come from near and far and include a deep sea fishing charter, Red Sox and Patriots tickets, a daylong pontoon party on Long Lake and an NFL football signed by this year’s New England Patriots team. Everyone is invited, and the event is family-friendly.

“Joanie and I are not asking for cash donations, but we recognize that people feel connected to the project on Depot Street and want to show support” by signing up to volunteer for painting shifts, hammer-swinging and old-fashioned barn-raising. The restoration of the old building was an integral part of this year’s Depot Street beautification project, which includes new sidewalks, lighting and landscaping, and has been closely watched by locals who welcome the ongoing renaissance of the downtown district.

The outpouring of support and donations has been incredible, and the list of participating nonprofits and local businesses is long, in keeping with Bridgton’s tradition of helping each other out.
