SOUTH PORTLAND – Southern Maine Community College, in South Portland, will host an on-the-spot acceptance day, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 19, to assist the growing number of students seeking to attend the college this fall.

Prospective students will be able meet one-on-one with college representatives and complete the entire admissions process in a single visit.

In addition, financial aid forms, orientation sign up and more will be available. Interested students should bring a copy of their high school diploma or transcript and, if transferring, an official college transcript in a sealed envelope.

Students who register during this special event will also be eligible for a raffle drawing awarding the tuition cost of one class in the fall semester.

New student registration at Southern Maine Community College is up 2.5 percent from last year, according to the press release announcing the spot admission day. “A college education is more valuable now than ever and affordability and transferability are key,” Ron Cantor, the college’s president said.

“We want to help as many students as possible get a smart start with a great college education at (a) low tuition,” he added. “The U.S. Department of Education says by 2020, an estimated two-thirds of all job openings will require postsecondary education or training.”
