Windham’s softball team is sitting comfortably in the No. 7 spot in the most recent West A Heal Point standings. The Eagles are at 5-6 after Monday’s 4-0 shutout loss to undefeated and top-ranked Scarborough. Ally Noble had two of Windham’s four hits in the game.

The last time the Eagles were shutout was in the season opener when they dropped a 7-0 decision at Deering. The Rams happen to be the one other undefeated team in the region.

The loss to the Red Storm was Windham’s fourth straight defeat, but all of the clubs they’ve lost to during that time are all quality opponents and three of those setbacks were by a single run. (The Eagles dropped a 3-2 contest at South Portland; a 6-5 loss at home to Portland; and then a 2-1 loss at Biddeford.)

Windham still has some tough games ahead with Massabesic visiting the Eagles on Friday and then Gorham will see the Eagles on Monday.

Bonny Eagle on cruise control

The Bonny Eagle softball team is on a four-game winning streak and they’re winning without any nail biting going on. The Scots have outscored their last four opponents (Kennebunk, Noble, Sanford, and McAuley) by a combined 39-5 total. Two of those games were shutouts as the Scots solidify their No. 4 ranking in this week’s West A Heal standings.

Coach Jan Corliss attributes much of the Scots’ success to their solid pitching. “I’m happy with our pitching,” says Corliss. “And our defense is coming together well.”

The Scots shutout Sanford last Friday, winning 5-0. In four innings of work Kaitlin Williams struck out six with no walks.

Maddie Kluna hit a two-run single in the fifth inning and Sarah Violette and Devin Young both had an RBI and a run.

According to Corliss, their hitting success is not about just one or two hitters. “I haven’t had the same batting order twice this season. Different people have stepped up at different times,” Corliss says.

Bonny Eagle is scheduled to face Cheverus on Friday and South Portland on Monday.

Lake Region shuts down Clippers

The Lake Region softball team is now 7-2 after Monday’s 5-0 shutout win against Yarmouth. The Lakers’ Jessie Hutchins struck out eight batters and the Lakers took advantage of seven errors by the Clippers.

Lake Region is currently No. 6 in this week’s West B Heal Point standings and they’ll look to secure and improve their playoff position when they visit Poland on Friday before hosting undefeated and top-ranked Fryeburg Academy on Saturday.
