Oliver to play in national classic

Noah Oliver, a junior at Westbrook High School, has been named a 2015 Brine National High School All-American, and has been selected to represent the New England region at the 2015 Brine National Lacrosse Classic, held in Midlothian, Va., between June 29-July 2.

The Brine National Lacrosse Classic brings the top high school lacrosse players in the nation to one venue, where regional teams will compete for national recognition in front of NCAA lacrosse coaches. Oliver is the son of Steve and Joy Oliver of Westbrook.

Painting, writing class

Authors and artists Kelsy Hartley and Mary Brooking are offering a creative writing and painting class in July.

The class is titled “The Written Image, The Painted Word” and is set for 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at Continuum for Creativity, 863 Main St., Westbrook. The cost is $95.

Church car wash

First Baptist Church, 733 Main St., Westbrook, is holding a car wash 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, June 27, in its parking lot.

Donations will be accepted and the event will benefit the church’s local mission project in and around Southern Maine.

Tate House ‘Poetry in the Garden’

The Tate House Museum, 1267 Westbrook Street, Portland, presents “Poetry in the Garden” on its lawn by the Stroudwater River on Tuesday, June 30, from 6:30-8:00.

Two distinguished Portland poets, Marcia Brown and Alice Persons, will read selected works and discuss their poetry.

Brown is the poet laureate of Portland. She is the author of four poetry collections and editor of Port City Poems.

Her poetry has been included in Garrison Keillor’s latest anthology “Good Poems, American Places” and has been read on his show. Her poem “When I Look at the Old Car” is featured on the “Car Talk” website. She has been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Persons believes that “there is a type of poetry for everyone to enjoy.” She co-founded Moon Pie Press in 2003, and has been its editor and publisher since 2006. She publishes poetry books so that it is not only affordable but also attractive to all readers. Her poetry has been featured on Keillor’s “The Writer’s Almanac” on NPR.

This event is part of the Tate House Museum summer lecture series. Admission fee, which supports the museum and its programs, is $10 ($8 for museum members). Light refreshments will be served.

Supercuts marks milestone

Supercuts, 11 Main St., in Westbrook Plaza, is celebrating 10 years in Westbrook.

It is locally owned and operated by franchisee Mark Muscatello, who has been hiring local staff and stylists since opening in Westbrook in 2005. He said that ongoing training allows Supercuts stylists to stay current on the latest looks so they can help guests with their existing style or give them a fresh, new cut. Vassell earns degrees

Ackelia Nerine Vassell of Westbrook graduated last month in commencement exercises at Clemson University in South Carolina. Vassell earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing and bachelor of arts in communications.
