The Scots got down early to visiting Cheverus on Saturday morning – but battled ferociously back, with Jenna Litif and Catherine Biegel leading the way, to tie things up again as the first half wound down. The score remained close for the latter 25 minutes, but the Stags emerged as victors in the end, 10-8.
Bonny Eagle slips to 1-3 on the result. The girls in green rank eighth in A West, just behind Sanford (2-3) and in front of Noble (2-3). A win would bolster them – both in spirit and in the standings – as Cheverus, now 2-2, occupies fifth in A East, back from Brunswick (3-4) but ahead of Windham (3-1).
Still, the Lady Scots can walk away from Saturday’s loss with heads held high; they did show themselves capable of focus and determination; the comeback they exploded into after falling significantly behind – after the game appeared it would go entirely against them – should encourage them.
Led by Allie Scott and Carley Farber, the Stags jumped out front 4-0 in the first 10 minutes. But then Bonny Eagle wanted its turn, and took it: Litif ignited their scoring with a free-position goal, then assisted Catherine Biegel on a follow-up point just 14 seconds later.
Cheverus slowed the assault shortly thereafter, grabbing their fifth, but the Scots persisted. Biegel earned the 5-3 tally with 4:41 to play before the break when she juked through the Stags’ defense from high-left for the shot and the score.
Biegel pulled her squad within one less than a minute later. Autumn Brady fed Biegel from behind the Stags’ cage and Biegel pulled the trigger on a five-hole bounce shot past the Cheverus keeper. Hannah Litif then tied things up, on another free-position shot, with 25.6 seconds remaining.
The Stag’s fire continued to burn in the second half, just not quite brightly enough. Led by Nicole Pineau, who posted a quick hat trick, Cheverus surged ahead again after the break, scoring the first five goals of the latter 25 minutes and leaving the Scots playing catchup all over again.
Bonny Eagle nearly managed it, too. They hashed three more on the way to two comebacks in one game, but the final buzzer tolled the end of the push before they could complete it.
The Scots next faced off at TA on Tuesday the 12th, after the Lakes Region Weekly’s print deadline. They travel to Gorham on Thursday.
