As usual, Cape put together strong sports seasons this fall, with their biggest victory coming at Golf States, where coach Chris Whitney’s quartet – Austin Legge, Ryan Collins, Max Altznauer and Lauren Schonewolf – combined to capture first place. A week later, Collins split the individual title with Oceanside’s Nick Mazurek.
Overall, the Capers went undefeated through 2015.
Elsewhere, Ben Raymond’s boys soccer squad steered a .500 (7-7) regular season into the postseason’s seven-seed, where they fended off a fiery Freeport team in the prelims, but fell 2-0 in the quarters to eventual State Champs Yarmouth, who had bedeviled them all autumn.
Craig Fannan’s girls soccer team grabbed the No. 3 playoffs slot with a 10-4 record in the regular season; that earned them a bye through the prelims and homefield advantage against No. 11 Gray-New Gloucester in the quarters. Cape narrowly won that matchup, 1-0; they fell in the semis, however, to second-ranked York, 3-2 in double-OT.
Football, under the direction of Aaron Filieo, posted another superb run, amassing a 6-2 regular-season record to enter the bracketing ranked second only to Yarmouth. Cape trounced Gray-New Gloucester 33-16 in the quarters, but fell 20-14 to No. 3 Wells in the semis.
Volleyball, Sarah Boeckel’s squad, were reigning State Champs as the fall got under way, and looked poised to repeat as they converted their regular season schedule into a 12-2 record and a No. 1 seed. The Capers earned a bye through the prelims, then bounced Yarmouth in straight sets in the quarters. In the finals, though, they came up short against Scarborough, who went on to win the whole enchilada.
Derek Veilleux’s cross country boys captured fifth at Regionals, and sixth at States, while Andrew Lupien’s girls finished fourth at Regionals and fifth at States.
Maura Bisogni’s field hockey crew struggled this year, going 0-14 in the regular season and missing the playoffs; no doubt they’ll return in 2016 invigorated and improved.
Of special note: Sailing may not be an MPA-sanctioned sport, but it nevertheless attracts a lot of attention in some communities, and the Cape team continues to show strongly. Cooper Siepert, for instance, recently competed at Nationals.
