I am writing in response to the article on the Clynk bottle return facility (“Quick return,” Nov. 30, 2006.) I was surprised that the article did not mention that some patrons object to the purchasing of the bags. When the Clynk facility first opened, there was no purchasing requirement and I was very happy with the system. However, once the bag purchasing went into place, I objected to this and took my returnables elsewhere.

In discussing this among friends, I found that I was not alone and several of them also objected. We have all opted to go to Shaw’s, or a redemption center such as Rolando’s in South Portland, to avoid purchasing bags. It’s not the price of the bags (20 cents each); it’s the principle of the thing. I do not want to have to purchase an item in order to be able to use a service.
