WESTBROOK – The charter commission has all its members after the Westbrook Municipal Officers announced their picks at their meeting Monday night.
The municipal officers, made up of the city councilors and the mayor, unanimously supported appointing Michael Mullett, Gary Reardon and James Violette to the charter commission.
They will join the six members the people of Westbrook voted to the commission in November. The elected members include Lisa Chuluda, Patricia Amico, Michael Levine, Susan Rossignol, Eileen Shutts and Drew Gattine.
Council president Brendan Rielly said Mullett, Reardon and Violette make great additions to the commission, which is responsible for reviewing the city’s charter. City officials do not believe the charter has been closely reviewed since its adoption in 1907.
Mullett is the only appointee of the three who ran for a spot on the commission during the election. The 35-year-old from Pride Street said he ran because he has an interest in the city’s structure and wants to examine whether the current system is the best way to run things. He said at the time that he was not sure what, if anything, needed to be changed in the charter.
He has held many volunteer positions and ran the Westbrook recreational soccer league the past two years.
Reardon, 46, of Webster Street, said he expressed interest in the post because he is a lifelong Westbrook resident and would like to be involved in reviewing its charter.
“It’s a great city to live in,” he said, adding he would “like to have a say” in the charter review.
Like Mullett, he is involved in youth sports. He is the past president of the Westbrook hockey league’s board of directors and is involved in girls travel basketball.
Violette, 50, of Crestwood Drive, said he appreciates the unique way the city operates. However, he said the charter is very old and, like anything else, should be reviewed occasionally.
“The skeleton of our charter is great,” he said, adding he does not think it needs significant changes. He is interested in examining whether city council terms should be staggered, he said.
Rielly said Violette would bring good perspective to the commission due to his background. He formerly held posts on the zoning and planning boards and City Council, and currently serves on the school committee.
