A pair of 3-pointers to close the third quarter on Saturday sparked a Greely surge from which Gray-New Gloucester couldn’t recover.

The Rangers, No. 2 in the first release of the Class B West Heal Point standings, got consecutive 3s from Karlee Biskup and Abby Young to take an eight-point lead in the waning moments of the third quarter and never looked back, topping Gray-New Gloucester 50-39 in Cumberland.

Greely improved to 6-1.

The Patriots stand at 5-4, bouncing back from the loss to the Rangers with a 48-19 win over Poland on Tuesday. They sit at 11th in the Heal Points.

Gray-New Gloucester trailed Greely 11-8 after the first quarter and 20-19 at the half, but took the lead to start the third on a layup by Rachel Clement. Biskup, who finished with a game-high 19 points, answered immediately with the first two of her 11 second-quarter points.

Held to two points in the first half, Biskup erupted for 17 after the break, including three 3-pointers.

“We lost Biskup a couple times just because we didn’t want to get out and contest,” said Gray-New Gloucester coach Chris Aube. “I don’t think we played very good defense that whole second half.”

Still, the Patriots were within two after Laura Getchell knocked down a 15-foot jumper with 2:05 to go in the third. Biskup followed with a 3 and Young added hers with 20 seconds left in the quarter to make it 36-28 entering the third.

Two straight 3s by Biskup midway through the fourth put the game out of reach for Gray-New Gloucester, which was playing without usual starting center Kassie Wilson, who was nursing an ankle injury.

Young, a 6-footer, ended up with 16 points. Getchell, giving up several inches to Young, was strong inside for the Patriots, scoring 11 points. Meghan Dehetre also had 11 for Gray-New Gloucester, including three 3s. Terri-Lynn Sanborn chipped in eight, while Clement added seven.

Aube was disappointed in his squad’s defensive intensity in the second half.

“I don’t think we worked hard enough,” he said. “(Biskup) was able to get to the basket. It wasn’t like we were playing defense for 20 or 30 seconds. It was she dribbled the ball up and went right by our defender, so I tried to play zone, then we didn’t get out on the shooter.”

The offense was unable to pick up the slack.

“We didn’t get many open shots,” Aube said. “We didn’t take care of the ball. We had 25 or 26 turnovers, unforced.”

And the Rangers were ready to pounce when the got the chance.

“Good teams, when they have the opportunity, they’ll put you away, and that’s what happened,” Aube said.

Undefeated York sits atop the West B standings with the rest of the playoff picture still wide open, according to Aube, leaving the Patriots in position to make a playoff push over the next few weeks.

“I think we’ll be fine,” he said. “I think we have enough Heal Point games left for us that we could get in. You’ve got York, then you’ve got a lot of other teams that could beat anybody on any given night. We just need to tighten it up. We don’t score (a lot), so we really need to defend.”
