Although I must congratulate the Council on their civility toward each other, the public was slapped in the face. Other than councilors Waig and MacKinnon a request for a simple public hearing to receive comment on whether or not to place on November’s ballot a vote to move the municipal elections to November was not allowed.
What was refused was not to put it on the ballot which would allow the democratic process of a vote. What was refused was to allow the citizens to speak to the issue. Regardless of how a councilor feels, to refuse a public hearing seems no less than a blatant disregard for the voice of the people.
It also shows in unquestionable terms who was willing to listen and who was not. Fortunately, there are other routes to getting something on a ballot. If people would like to join this effort please call me at 329-5042.
