The 10th annual Maine milfoil summit will be held Friday, Feb. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, at the Lewiston-Auburn campus of the University of Southern Maine at 51 Westminster Street in Lewiston.
Participants in the summit will have an opportunity to learn about:
– The status of the Eurasian milfoil infestation in Salmon Lake and the control efforts planned for this year, from Peter L. Kallin, executive director of the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance.
– Invasive species enforcement and how the economic downturn might affect boat registrations and milfoil revenues, from Col. Joel Wilkinson, chief of the Maine Warden Service.
– A report on the major initiative to gain federal funds to battle invasive plants on the 29 infested lakes in Maine, by the Little Sebago Lake Association.
– A look back at the decade of efforts to prevent and control invasive aquatic plants in Maine, by Peter Lowell, executive director of the Lakes Environmental Association.
– Updates by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Maine Congress of Lakes Association and Maine Center for Invasive Aquatic Plants.
The summit is free and open to the public. It is organized by the Lakes Environmental Association in Bridgton, with support from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Arthur G. and Gerardine L. Connolly Family.
