Scarborough’s Ben Wessel, who overcame a torn ligament that ended his season on the mound to lead the Red Storm with his bat, won the Dr. John Winkin Award, given annually to Maine’s best high school baseball player.
Wessel led the Southern Maine Activities Association in batting average (.486), slugging (.943), on-base percentage (.600), RBI (21), triples (four) and home runs (two). He also was 6-0 with a 0.62 ERA as a pitcher when he injured his elbow.
Wessel will play at University of Rhode Island next year.
