Mainers force third game in NECBL playoff series

Nate LaPointe’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the fourth-seeded Sanford Mainers a 7-6 victory over the top-seeded Newport Gulls in the New England Collegiate Baseball League division semifinals at Goodall Park.

The win tied the best-of-three series. The deciding game is Sunday at Newport, R.I.

The Mainers got home runs from Anthony Hajjar, Will Cooper, Jordan Betts, John Gorman and Matt Horan.

JUNIOR LEGION: Gray-New Gloucester scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Biddeford in the opener of a best-of-three playoff series at Biddeford.

Trailing 4-1, Gray-New Gloucester got consecutive singles from Tyler Credit, Evan Hermer and Brandon Hubbard to load the bases. The next two batters walked, Tim Ah squeezed Hubbard home, and two batters were hit by pitches.

Kerry Crepeau had three RBI for Biddeford.

Nick DePalma struck out 13 and pitched a two-hitter to lead Bruno’s Restaurant to a 2-0 win over Brunswick in Game 1 of a best-of-three series at Portland.

Brunswick’s John Parker also fanned 13.

Peyton Kennison struck out 10 over six-plus innings and Billy Bickford and Kaleb Bridgham had two hits apiece to lead Tri-Town to a 5-2 opening-game playoff win over Standish at Minot.

Standish starter Nick York scattered six hits and struck out 11.

FCBL: Cole Bryant allowed just three hits and struck out nine to lead the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (20-29) to a 4-3 win over the Seacoast Mavericks (20-27) at Portsmouth, N.H.

Jason Vosler had pair of hits with an RBI and a run for the Tide.

SOCCER

MLS: Teal Bunbury scored in the 20th minute to give Sporting KC a 1-0 victory over the New England Revolution at Foxborough, Mass.

GOLF

PGA: J.J. Henry made an eagle for the third straight day and scored 14 points in the third round to take the lead in the Reno-Tahoe Open at Reno, Nev.

Henry had 36 points overall in the tour’s first modified Stableford scoring system event since 2006, three more than second-round leader Alexandre Rocha.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: David Peoples matched his career best with a 10-under 62 to take a three-stroke lead in the 3M Championship at Blaine, Minn.

Peoples had a 14-under 130 total. Eduardo Romero was second after a 65.

HARNESS RACING

HAMBLETONIAN: Market Share won at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, N.J., putting Linda Toscano in the record book as the first female trainer to win trotting’s premier race.

CITI OPEN: Fourth-seeded Tommy Haas beat top-seeded Mardy Fish 6-3, 7-5 to reach the final at Washington, D.C.

Haas will face second-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over No. 8 Sam Querrey.

In the women’s final, unseeded Magdalena Rybarikova beat top-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-1.

CYCLING

DOPING: Cycling’s international governing body is pressing its case for jurisdiction over the doping case against Lance Armstrong.

In its newest statement, the International Cycling Union argued that it, and not the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, is the authority that should handle the Armstrong case. USADA officials disagree, and say that with so much corruption in cycling, UCI has a strong motivation not to reveal the truth.

FOOTBALL

EFL: Anthony Hicks caught two touchdown passes and had three interceptions on defense to lead the Maine Sabers (2-3) to a 19-0 win over the Twin City Blue Raiders (1-4) at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Christopher Kates added a third touchdown pass to Chris Libby.
