STANDISH – A drunk driver who had stolen a 2003 Subaru Legacy from Cape Elizabeth earlier in the day crashed the car into the historic Marrett House in Standish Wednesday night, according to police.
According to eyewitness accounts, the driver, Abraham Gammons, 39, of Portland, was heading eastbound on Route 25 at 6:30 p.m. when he swerved across oncoming traffic and into the side of the 200-year-old house. The vehicle was totaled, and the house suffered significant damage, according to the Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Goulet said Gammons, the lone occupant, was transported to Maine Medical Center. Due to prior probation revocations, there is no bail set. He will be transferred to Cumberland County jail upon release from the hospital.
Gammons is charged with aggravated criminal mischief, operating under the influence, operating after suspension and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He is wanted on five warrants, including unpaid court fines to Portland and Biddeford courts, refusing to submit to arrest and probation revocations for burglary, forgery and theft.
Further charges from Cape Elizabeth will be forthcoming, Goulet said.
