SCARBOROUGH – On Saturday, June 14, members of the Scarborough Kiwanis Club delivered boxes of food to the Scarborough Food Pantry, along with $720 in cash donations, to help the many families in our community that rely on the food pantry each month.

From June 2-14, Scarborough residents dropped off their non-perishable donations to participating Scarborough schools and businesses that helped in the effort, including Saco Biddeford Savings Bank, Blue Point Congregational Church, La-Z-Boy Furniture, and Ron Forest and Son Fence Co. in Scarborough.

“No child deserves to go to bed hungry,” said district chairwoman Ava Adams. “Only 17 states have a higher rate of food insecurity in U.S. than Maine, and Maine has the highest rate in New England. The startling statistic is that one in 5 children goes to bed hungry in Maine every day. We want to help these families.”

The Scarborough Food Pantry serves 160 to 200 families per month, with an average of 20 new families each month. Families range in size from one to nine people and cover all age groups. Approximately 60 percent of families include children. Among these families are varied ethnicities and dietary needs.

Donations are always welcome. Cash and food donations can be made directly to the food pantry at 167 Black Point Road, Scarborough.

Scarborough Kiwanis’s mission is to improve the world, one child and one community at a time. If you’d like more information on becoming a member of Kiwanis, contact Club President Sherry Forest at sforest@gwi.net.
